Papers, chiefly 1869-1913, of Burwell, including correspondence from his Charlotte, N.C., law practice, speeches for ceremonial occasions, and papers relating to family events, Confederate veterans' activities, and the bar association. Also included are three scrapbooks of members of the Burwell family, with clippings about family and social events in Charlotte, 1894-1913, and a Good Roads Tour, New York to Atlanta, 1909; a military pass and an account book of Capt. Burwell, 1864; and caricatures, drawings, and mimeographed student newspapers of a grandson, also named Armistead Burwell, 1935-1936.

Armistead Burwell enlisted 12 May 1861, at age 21. He was a farmer. He was wounded Drewy's Bluff 16 May 1864 and paroled Richmond May 1865.His brother Charles S. Burwell enlisted Clarksville, 12 May 1861. He was a farmer also and was discharged with a disability 9 September 1862.
